Good study skills are known to be vital to successful learning. This book provides a set of resources to allow students to practice several key study skills; reading and comprehension, understanding different writing styles, note making and note taking, memory maps and training, revision and exam skills. However, it also goes beyond this to look at the needs of the student as a learner. In an attempt to answer the question What makes a successful student? We have identified not only these traditional study skills but also a range of other skills and abilities. These skills are used by students who are not necessarily the most academically gifted, but they are those who:
Have an understanding of their learning preferences and work to these strengthsOrganise their time and resourcesSet targets and are pleased with their successReviseComplete assignments, tests and exams successfullyWe believe that students need to understand something about their personal study preferences. Resources are therefore supplied to help students identify their personal learning skills, set targets, plan their time, understand the importance of diet and health and know how to handle stress. Having this self - awareness empowers students to use their talents in a variety of ways allowing them to learn more efficiently and achieve success at Key stage 3 and 4.
The materials are split into three parts:
1. Personal Learning Skills2. Practical Literacy Skills3. Revision and Exam SkillsHaving this self-awareness empowers students to use their talents in a variety of ways
allowing them to learn more efficiently. In our work in schools, study clubs and challenge events we have been surprised at how often students and teachers were not confident about learning how to learn and this book offers practical resources and specific skills to support both students and teachers.
